About the Directory | VoIP National

How VoIP National builds its US area-code reference, attributes its sources and distinguishes information from telephone services.

VoIP National is an independent informational directory about US geographic numbers and incoming calls. It does not assign numbers, operate a telephone network, sell service or provide customer support for a provider. Some articles contain links to third-party commercial services. Check the supplier’s current capabilities and contract before ordering.

How the directory is built

The NANPA NPA database, file dated October 25, 2026, supplies in-service dates and overlay complexes for all 372 geographic codes in the 50 states and District of Columbia. A saved CSV and checksum accompany the local dataset. An automated comparison checks every published code, date and active overlay membership against that snapshot; planned codes are excluded.

Each territorial overlay complex is retained separately. A code can participate in more than one complex, so sharing one code does not imply that two territories are identical. Dates are the registry’s in-service dates, not announcement dates; historical January 1 entries are reproduced as recorded, without claiming day-level historical precision.

City and regional descriptions are adapted from Wikipedia’s area-code list; capital and largest-city names use its state reference. Standard offsets and daylight-saving qualifications use the state time-offset reference. These sources were retrieved October 25, 2026. Adapted material is attributed under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes include selecting US geography, grouping by state and condensing the tables. Wikipedia history notes are not used for dates or overlays.

US territories and Canadian numbering areas serving small border communities are outside the main counts. City labels identify a city or wider service region, not an exhaustive municipal or street-level map. State time-zone notes are not NPA-specific clocks. Confirm the exact rate center, local time rules and current number inventory before choosing service.

What a listing means

A listed code is not an offer of service, proof of number availability or a claim about where the person answering is located. A number’s voice, messaging, forwarding and emergency-calling capabilities depend on the actual service. Geographic numbering and a business’s legal address are different matters.

The guides link to FCC consumer information where dialing or US telephone rules are discussed. This is general information, not legal advice.

Using this site

This is a static reference with no customer accounts, payment forms or document-upload service. Do not submit identity documents or account information here. Historical login, signup and payment routes are not part of the rebuilt directory. Third-party sites apply their own terms and privacy policies after you follow a link.
